Ask Tom Elmhirst to list his 10 all-time favorite LPs and he’ll blow past the quota in a heartbeat and give you 20, each one “an important milestone” in the life of the future mix engineer coming of age in London in the 1970s and ’80s.

His choices range from classics like Neil Young’s Harvest to the albums that sparked Elmhirst’s love of reggae and dub, the Wailers’ Soul Rebels and Augusto Pablo’s King Tubby Meets Rockers Uptown.

“They were all important records for me growing up,” says Elmhirst. “I had no knowledge of the studio when I bought most of these records, but I was gripped by the whole experience of vinyl, including the incredible artwork, lyrics and credits. It’s very much how I started in music.”
