Grace Potter, Gary Clark Jr., Grimes to Play O Music Awards Opening for Flaming Lips’ Guinness Record Run

The Flaming Lips will be flirting with the Guinness World Record for most live concerts within a 24 hour period (multiple cities) at this month’s O Music Awards, and today Viacom Music Group announced the eclectic and exciting series of openers who will be joining the band on its tri-state trek on June 27th and 28th.

Grace Potter & the Nocturnals, Gary Clark Jr, Grimes, and Neon Indian will be among the artists that will entertain audiences with full sets before the Flaming Lips appear for what the group is calling “mini-sets featuring many surprise collaborations and guests.” The day-long event will be live streamed for 24 straight hours, courtesy of the O Music Awards, which celebrates the most innovative minds in music. Awards will be handed out along the band’s trek, including “Must Follow Artist on Twitter” and “Best Music App.”

During the O Music Awards, the band will attempt to smash the record previously set by rap icon Jay-Z. Profits from each of the 8 shows will be donated to VH1’s Save the Music Foundation, but fans unable to make it out to cheer on the band will have the chance to watch the spectacle by way of a live stream.

The Lips’ attempt at the record promises to include surprise guests along the way in addition to an intimate look at what life on the road can be like for a touring band. Cameras will follow the band and its friends as they travel by bus and take the stage in 8 different cities, with a different opening act at each stop during the day.
