For National Cheeseburger Day on Monday, Sept. 18, some fast-food restaurant chains will be offering deals on their burgers, including McDonald’s and Wendy’s.

Cheeseburgers have an interesting history: 16-year-old Lionel Sternberger — whose father owned a sandwich shop in Pasadena, California — put a slice of cheese on a hamburger in 1924 and called it a “cheese hamburger,” according to the Carnegie Museum of Natural History.

Now that you know the juicy history behind this favorite way to eat a burger, here are ways to get a free or cheap cheeseburger on National Cheeseburger Day 2023.

Is McDonald’s celebrating National Cheeseburger Day?

McDonald’s will have 50-cent double cheeseburgers on Monday, Sept. 18, at participating locations nationwide. You have to order through the McDonald’s app.

The offer is limited to one double cheeseburger per customer.

The free app is available in the Apple App Store and Android Google Play Store.

National Cheeseburger Day 2023 deals

Burger King is offering National Cheeseburger Day deals all week for members of its Royal Perks loyalty program, which is free to join at BK.com or on the Burger King app:

  • Sept. 18: Get a free cheeseburger with any purchase of $1 or more.

  • Sept. 19: Get a free Whopper Jr. with a $1 purchase.

  • Sept. 20: Get a Whopper for $3.

  • Sept. 21: Get a BOGO deal on Whoppers.

  • Sept. 22: Get free onion rings with a $1 purchase.

  • Sept. 23: Get a Family Bundle for $22. It includes two Whopper sandwiches, two original chicken sandwiches and two eight-piece chicken nuggets.

  • Sept. 24: Get double rewards on all purchases.

Wendy's also has a National Cheeseburger Day deal. From Monday, Sept. 18, to Friday, Sept. 22, customers can get a Jr. Bacon Cheeseburger for 1 cent with any purchase. The offer must be redeemed on the Wendy’s app or website.
