Gotham Awards announce inaugural TV awards to be handed out just in time to influence Emmys

The Gotham Film and Media Institute has announced that it will present its first ever Gotham TV Awards on June 4, 2024. This is a major development in the TV awards season as this ceremony is scheduled nine days before Emmy nomination voting starts on June 13, giving these awards the opportunity to directly influence the television academy. The eight awards to be handed out are as follows:

Previously, the Gotham Awards held in November jointly honored feature films and breakthrough TV shows, though there were fewer than a handful of categories celebrating work on the small screen. In 2023 there were three awards: Breakthrough Series (Under 40 Minutes) went to “Beef,” Breakthrough Series (Over 40 Minutes) went to “A Small Light,” and Best Performance in a New Series was awarded to “Beef” star Ali Wong.

From the press release: “The Gotham TV Awards nominations will be selected by committees of critics, journalists, programmers, and curators. Separate juries of writers, directors, actors, producers, editors, and others directly involved in the making of TV and film will determine the final award recipients.” So unlike the Golden Globes and Critics Choice Awards these winners will be determined by peers within the industry, just like the Emmys, though those small juries often make surprising and idiosyncratic decisions.

Nevertheless, eight of the last 10 Best Feature winners at the Gothams have gone on to receive Best Picture nominations at the Oscars. Will the Gotham TV Awards similarly launch shows into Emmy contention?

The Gotham Executive Director Jeffrey Sharp said in an official statement, “We are proud of our legacy in recognizing the creative community in film and TV, and we have come to recognize that our TV awards could have even greater impact. We sense a unique opportunity to widen our reach by expanding our competitive categories and tributes in a show focused solely on creators of episodic TV, limited series, and non-theatrical streaming movies.”

The Gotham Deputy Director Kia Brooks added, “This expansive view of the creative landscape harkens back to our founding mission in 1979 to celebrate and nurture independent film and media creators. We believe this awards show could be a launching pad to expand our support of TV creators and continue our longstanding tradition of discovering unique voices and elevating original stories.”
