Southern Ladies Arm Wrestling (SLAW) is looking for a few over-the-top competitors for its Oct. 21 charity event at Creature Comforts Brewery to benefit Athens non-profit Project Safe. The deadline for applicants is Oct. 8, and SLAW organizer Hannah Gentry told the Banner-Herald that each contestant will need to have at least one member in their character's entourage.

Gentry compared the competition to the 1980s women's wrestling television series, "G.L.O.W.," which later served as the basis for a popular Netflix series. The SLAW event, which is seeking 8 to 10 applicants, encourages costumes, personas and teammates. Attendees will trade in money for event currency, which will be collected by members of each character's entourage during the matches.

Live music will be provided by Athens musician Luke Fields (Bit Brigade, We Versus The Shark), who will be performing covers of 1980s songs, and Lucky Cobra Tattoo will provide temporary tattoos for guests at the show. According to Gentry, the action at the SLAW show will also be live, and the winner will be crowned Arm Wrestling Queen.

"Nothing's predetermined at all," said Gentry. "That goes for the audience as well as for the wrestlers themselves. We're going to try to get people to win."

The registration form and a list of event rules can be found at slawladies.org. Admission to the show will cost $15, and V.I.P. ringside judge tables are available for $150. Creature Comforts Brewery is located at 271 W. Hancock Ave.
