A North Carolina astrologer shot for the stars — and wowed the celebrity judges on “American Idol.”

Nailyah Serenity took to the show’s stage to perform a cover of “My Man” by Barbra Streisand. The contestant was praised for putting a modern spin on the 1960s tune, as seen in video from the episode that aired Sunday, March 19.

“You straddled it with your own flair,” said judge Katy Perry. “You gave it this like contemporary vibe.”

Serenity’s performance also drew comparisons to legendary singers Ella Fitzgerald and Nina Simone, leaving the judges standing with applause.

“I just hope that if you get to have this opportunity, you keep people paying attention with your little unique twist,” Perry said. “You got it girl.”

In addition to putting her own personality into her performance, Serenity brought her own clothing style to the audition. The 22-year-old retail advisor from Charlotte wore colorful pants that she made herself.

It turns out, success was “written in the stars,” and Serenity moved on to the next round of the competition. The night that her episode aired, she took to Facebook to write: “I’m going to Hollywood!”
