Gospel group The Jones Trio, poet One Single Rose performing tonight in Carleton

CARLETON — Gospel music and performance poetry will come together tonight at the Carleton Branch Library.

The gospel group The Jones Trio and Detroit performance poet and singer One Single Rose will perform at 7 tonight at the branch, 1444 Kent St. The program is part of the Monroe County Library System’s annual Black History Month Blues series. Admission to all programs is free. The public is welcome.

“It is an honor to have the Jones Trio returning,” Nancy Bellaire, library director, said. “Their enduring talent and musical prowess continue to captivate audiences across generations.”

The Jones Trio describes its music as “traditional gospel and soul redefined,” moving among gospel, spirituals, soul, rhythm and blues and classical singing. The group includes Robert B. Jones II, his wife Rosa Warner-Jones, and his sister, Arnesia Jones. The members have sung church music from an early age and took part in music education and performance skills training in secondary and higher education. Prior to forming the trio, the members performed as a family with Rev. Robert Jones and his wife, Bernice, in the library’s annual blues series.

Robert B. Jones II is the musical director and arranger for the Jones Trio. He received training in vocal music education and performance at Alabama A&M and Madonna University. Both he and his wife were members of the gospel choir Dr. E. LaQuint Weaver and the Hallelujah Singers that was featured in the Emmy-award-winning documentary “Let’s Have Some Church Detroit Style.” Jones currently serves as minister of music for Sweet Kingdom Missionary Baptist Church in Detroit.

Rosa Warner-Jones was a member of the Grammy-nominated choir at Central State University in Wilberforce, Ohio, where she took part in a recording that included the Cincinnati Pops Orchestra. She has performed with numerous Detroit gospel groups and has been nominated for Best Gospel Artist at the Detroit Black Music Awards. Warner-Jones has a one-woman-show, “Mahalia,” paying tribute to the legendary queen of gospel, Mahalia Jackson.

Arnesia Jones has starred in many leading vocal roles throughout her academic career and won a Detroit-wide radio competition that enabled her to sing with national superstar Jennifer Hudson at Detroit’s Music Hall. She now produces her own concerts with backup singers and band. She takes part as a chapel singer at services at the Salvation Army Adult Rehabilitation Center in Detroit.

Wilson has been nominated for Poetry Author of the Year at The National Poetry Awards and was named Best Local Poet by the Detroit Metro Times reader’s choice. Wilson is in demand for conducting poetry workshops in schools nationally and internationally.

“This event promises to be a unique experience, reminding us all of the timeless power of music to unite and inspire,” Bellaire said.
