Gosho Aoyama’s Yaiba Manga Gets Anime Remake

Shogakukan’s Weekly Shonen Sunday magazine announced on Wednesday, May 8, 2024, that an anime adaptation of Gōshō Aoyama’s 1993 Yaiba manga is in the making. To celebrate the announcement, a short trailer and a teaser visual drawn by the author were released. The anime television adaptation is a remake of the first Kenyū Densetsu Yaiba anime series that aired from April 1993 to April 1994.

So far, the staff of Yaiba did not reveal much other than announcing that Gōshō Aoyama supervising the script. However, reports indicate that the anime will completely adapt the Yaiba manga.

Aoyama, who is the mangaka of the global hit series Detective Conan, wrote and illustrated the Yaiba manga. The manga began serialization in Shogakukan’s Weekly Shonen Sunday magazine from September 1988 to December 1993. Moreover, the chapters were later compiled in twenty-four tankōbon volumes. Before the upcoming Yaiba anime adaptation, the manga received an anime television series in April 1993. Pastel Studio animated the 52-episode series, which Kunihiko Yuyama directed.

The official website for the Yaiba anime adaptation describes the plot in the following manner: “The main character, Yaiba Kurogane, is a wild samurai who trains in the jungle with his father, Kenjuro! By chance, he returns to Japan and meets his rival Takeshi Onimaru (Onimaru no Takeshi) at his new training ground.”

The synopsis further continues, “The blade spends his days in serious competition, but when Onimaru gets his hands on the “legendary magic sword,” he embarks on a journey of great adventure full of spectacle…! An intense and fun chanbara action series drawn by Gosho Aoyama begins!”
