2024 Celebration of Alabama Arts

The Alabama State Council on the Arts presents the 2024 Celebration of the Arts on Thursday, May 16, 7 p.m. at Alabama Shakespeare Festival in Montgomery. This event shines a spotlight on arts and creativity in Alabama and on individuals who make significant and impactful contributions to our state’s rich cultural landscape. This event will honor Pinky/MM Bass, Russell Gulley, Chester Higgins, Elias Katsaros, Kevin King, Greta Lambert, Monique Ryan, and Jeanie Thompson. Millbrook Mayfest

An artistic day of fun, food, handmade items and crafts, fine arts, music and more is ahead Saturday, May 18, 9 a.m.-2 p.m. at Millbrook's Village Green Park. Millbrook Mayfest is family friendly and for all ages, plus it's free to attend. It's sponsored by the city of Millbrook's Cultural Arts & Special Events Department and Parks & Recreation Department.

Spring Art Show in Wetumpka

The Spring Art Show returns to downtown Wetumpka on Saturday, May 18, starting at 9 a.m. This event is open to the public and free to attend. Local artists will showcase their works.

Red Bluff Music, Arts & Food Festival returns May 18

Vintage Hospitality Group will present the second annual Red Bluff Music, Arts & Food Festival on May 18, 2024 at Montgomery’s Riverwalk Amphitheater. it will showcase the best in blues, jazz, country, southern soul, and more. The main lineup includes We Got The Jazz: The Jazz of A Tribe Called Quest featuring Atlanta’s Dashill Smith and Malcolm-Jamal Warner, 14-time Grammy winner and world-leading dobro master The Jerry Douglas Band, and the world reigning heavyweight champion of blues and rock guitar, the one and only Eric Gales. Take advantage of early bird discounted tickets available through the end of the year on Eventbrite.com.

  • Zelda In the Backyard: June 13 – June 30. When Libby inherits a wrecked 1961 Rolls Royce, she sets off on a journey to reassemble the car and pieces of the past her father left behind. In honor of her Alabama roots, she names the car after Zelda Fitzgerald. A little broken herself, Libby finds herself with a new understanding of marriage and family. From the playwright of Gee’s Bendand White LightningZelda in the Backyard is a story of love and loss, and all the roads in between. World Premiere: This play was developed through ASF’s 2022 Southern Writers Festival of New Plays.

  • Joseph and The Amazing Technicolor Dreamcoat: July 11 – August 11. One of the most enduring shows of all time, Joseph and the Amazing Technicolor Dreamcoat is a humorous retelling of the Biblical story of Joseph, his 11 brothers, his father Jacob, and the coat of many colors. Follow Joseph’s journey from bondage to becoming Pharaoh’s right-hand man to his ultimate reunion with his family. This delightful and merry musical — embracing country-western, calypso, and Elvis-style rock — will have you singing in your seat and long after you leave the theatre!

MONTGOMERY WHITEWATER

The following events are currently scheduled to take place in 2024 at Montgomery Whitewater, a 120-acre state-of-the-art recirculating whitewater park and outdoor adventure center located off I-65 in Montgomery:

  • Juneteenth Events at Montgomery Whitewater – June 19. This special Juneteenth celebration will feature a variety of competitions, live music performances and activities for the whole family. Rafting discounts will be available for Alabama residents and members of the military.

  • Fourth of July at Montgomery Whitewater - July 4. In celebration of Independence Day and the one-year anniversary of the park’s grand opening, the park will host an array of family friendly activities, including various races and exciting live music performances.

  • Golden Hour Festival – September 1-2. Wave goodbye to summer with live entertainment, a kayak cross competition, delicious food, whitewater thrills and family friendly activities like a 5K run and a kid’s Lil’ Tri triathlon.

  • Boats & Brews Festival – October 6. Crafty and adventurous souls are invited to participate in this build-your-own-boat competition. Not only will the winner have to cross the finish line first, but they’ll also have to navigate (and survive) the whitewater competition channel. A curated selection of regional craft beers will be available to fuel the creative spirit of boat-builders and casual spectators taking in the thrills and spills from the sidelines.

  • Whitewater Winter – December. The holidays arrive with a splash, including stunning light displays and an abundance of family friendly activities on and off the water that are sure to create cherished memories for years to come.

CAPRI THEATRE

Get tickets at capritheatre.org or call 334-262-4858. The Capri is at 1045 E. Fairview Ave, Montgomery. It’s the longest continually operated movie theatre in Alabama. Become a member of the Capri Community Film Society and receive ticket discounts, plus admission benefits at art house theaters across the country. Member tickets are $10, and non-member tickets are $12. Ticket books will be $90 for a pack of 10.

The Red Door Theatre is located 35 miles east of Montgomery. Many of our patrons are from the Montgomery area. Entering its 21st year, the Theatre is the second oldest community theatre (second only to Wetumpka Depot Players) in the River Region. "White Lightning," our April production, was written by Alabamian Elyzabeth Gregory Wilder, and was originally commissioned and produced at ASF in 2016.
