Spectrum TV customers in the Coachella Valley and elsewhere will start receiving a new kind of streaming box instead of the digital cable box or DVR they're used to.

The Xumo Stream Box, a joint venture between Charter Communications and Comcast, launched a national rollout of its new video streaming device to Spectrum customers on Wednesday.

Billed as the next generation of video entertainment that will make finding content simple and easy, the Xumo is a new device developed to integrate live TV and streaming apps seamlessly on one platform. It will be Charter’s go-to device for new video sales.

New Charter Spectrum video customers will receive one Xumo Stream Box at no cost for the first year, with additional units available for purchase or for a monthly service fee. Current Charter Spectrum customers can purchase the box outright for $60 or pay $5 per month.

Customers will now have the option to access Charter's pay-TV service on the Xumo Stream Box via an integrated Spectrum TV app. The Xumo combines live and on-demand TV and provides access to more than 300 integrated subscription and free, ad-supported apps, including Apple TV+, Disney+, Hulu, Max, MLB.TV, Netflix, Paramount+, Peacock, Pluto, Amazon Prime Video, Tubi and Xumo Play.

“Xumo is streaming simplified, bringing a live TV experience together with all the top apps,” said Rich DiGeronimo, President, Product and Technology for Charter. “With Xumo Stream Box, customers have endless entertainment options simplified, with aggregated search across apps and curated content offerings based on the customer’s interests and subscriptions, which will be even more powerful as direct-to-consumer apps are included with Spectrum service.”

The Xumo Stream Box will allow customers to quickly jump into their favorite live, on-demand or streaming content. It also allows discovery of new programming through an integrated, content-forward interface and voice remote. A built-in channel guide allows for browsing through subscribed channels.

Xumo Stream Boxes can be purchased at Spectrum stores, Spectrum.com, or by calling and speaking to a Spectrum agent.

New customers who still want the functions of a DVR can access the Spectrum cloud DVR within the Spectrum TV app. The ability to pause live TV is part of future plans.

The joint venture between Charter and Comcast — the two largest cable operators in the United States — was first announced 18 months ago.
