'Good Trouble' returns Jan. 2 on Freeform

If five seasons of Good Trouble — and five seasons of The Fosters before that — taught us anything, it's that you can't always get what you want, which makes the exclusive trailer for the final episodes of the Freeform hit a bit ominous as each character declares what they want.

"This is my dream, and I want to succeed," Dennis (Josh Pence) says, referring to his newly opened restaurant. "I want to be an artist," Gael (Tommy Martinez) declares. "I want to be the friend that you need," Malika (Zuri Adele) tells her ex, Isaac (Sarunas J. Jackson), as Luca's (Booboo Stewart) dancer crush Riley (Carina Conti) tells him, "I want you to let me in."

Finally, Mariana (Cierra Ramirez) shares her desires: "I want my title to be co-CEO," she presumably tells her ex, Evan (T.J. Linnard), who is still struggling to remember their relationship after being shot while trying to protect her from a cult.

Of course, that's only the beginning of the drama heading towards the beloved occupants of the Coterie.

Before Mariana can face her new title or her love triangle with Evan and Joaquin (Bryan Craig), she'll need to face the intruder in her loft revealed in the final moments of last May's cliffhanger: Silas, the cult leader.

While the trailer doesn't give much away about what he wants or any threats he may make, it's clear Mariana won't be completely unscathed. "This encounter will really affect Mariana for the upcoming season in the way that she thinks and the way that she lives," Ramirez told TVLine after the cliffhanger finale. "It’s definitely going to live with her."

At least there will be wedding bells in the air, right? Right?

In the clip, we see the return of engaged duo Callie (Maia Mitchell) and Jamie (Beau Mirchoff) happily dancing and also arguing after what appears to be one of the worst in-laws dinners in recorded history.

"It's no secret that we don't like your family and we're not fond of Callie," Jamie's mom Diane (Susan Walters) says at an intimate dinner with the couple as well as Callie's moms Stef and Lena (Teri Polo and Sherri Saum). (In case anyone forgot, this isn't the Hunters and Adams Fosters' first meeting: Stef's son Brandon married their daughter Eliza and their sons, Carter and Jude, also dated.)

Dennis and Davia (Emma Hunton) also appear to be hitting a rough patch — Luca says he saw Davia kissing someone else — while Alice (Sherry Cola) has second thoughts about living with Sumi (Kara Wang). And Isabella (Priscilla Quintana) is back to seek custody of Lyric.

Still, it's the opening of this trailer that should give fans hope as the Adams Foster journey, which has spanned more than 10 years, nears its conclusion.

"To my family, thank you for never giving up on me," Callie says in a toast.
