Good Trouble and Cruel Summer Cancelled, Freeform’s Final Scripted Shows

Freeform has cancelled its last two remaining scripted series, Good Trouble and Cruel Summer, TVLine has confirmed.

The Fosters spinoff Good Trouble will conclude with the back half of its fifth season (premiering Tuesday, Jan. 2), while the anthology series Cruel Summer wrapped up its second (and now final) season on July 31. With the axing of the animated comedy Praise Petey in November and grown-ish slated to air its final episodes in 2024, that leaves the future of Freeform’s scripted slate up in the air.

Per The Hollywood Reporter, which first reported the news, costs and low ratings played into the cancellation of Good Trouble and Cruel Summer.

Good Trouble — which started off as an offshoot about Fosters sisters Mariana (played by Cierra Ramirez) and Callie (Maia Mitchell) and their Coterie roommates in Los Angeles — will be given the opportunity to film some additional scenes for a supersized series finale episode to properly wrap up the show.

The upcoming episodes will welcome back Mitchell and Beau Mirchoff as Callie’s fiancé Jamie (get an exclusive first look here), and will mark the directorial debut of star/executive producer Ramirez. The current cast also includes Zuri Adele, Sherry Cola, Bryan Craig, Emma Hunton, Tommy Martinez, Josh Pence and Booboo Stewart.

The second installment of Cruel Summer starred Sadie Stanley (The Goldbergs), Lexi Underwood (Little Fires Everywhere) and Griffin Gluck (Locke & Key, Private Practice). It was set in an idyllic waterfront town in the Pacific Northwest and took place over three timelines around Y2K: July 1999, December 1999 and July 2000.

Viewers were introduced to Megan (Stanley) and Isabella (Underwood), two high schoolers who are thrown together when the latter comes to live with Megan and her family as an exchange student, of sorts. Although the girls’ relationship got off to a prickly start, they soon became close friends. But a love triangle formed with Megan’s best friend Luke (Locke & Key’s Griffin Gluck), threatening to derail Megan and Isabella’s bond, and Luke’s dead body eventually washed up on the shore, kicking off a whodunnit mystery.

The July 31 finale revealed that Luke’s brother Brent thought he accidentally killed Luke, but it was actually Isabella who intentionally drowned him. (Get scoop on the the episode’s big twists and burning mysteries from showrunner Elle Triedman here.)

Season 1, meanwhile, featured Olivia Holt (Cloak & Dagger) as popular girl Kate Wallis and Chiara Aurelia (Tell Me Your Secrets) as the awkward Jeanette Turner. Over the course of three different timelines — 1993, 1994 and 1995 — viewers followed the story as Kate went missing, then was later rescued and accused Jeanette of not helping her when she saw that Kate was being held captive.
