“I don’t buy into this thing that theatrical comedies aren’t a thing,” said Good Fortune director and star Aziz Ansari while presenting his Lionsgate movie Good Fortune on Wednesday at CinemaCon in what was the first look at the film.

The Parks and Rec alum came out on stage riffing, “I know what you’re thinking: Oh my God, it’s Henry Cavill in brown face, how inappropriate!”

“Adam (Fogelson)’s nickname for me is ‘Little brown Cavill’… Enough with Cavill…You’ve casted Henry Cavill in five films!” he jokingly admonished the Lionsgate Motion Picture Chair.

Ansari then thanked “all the exhibitors who left the strip club this morning to come to the presentation.”

He said his inspiration to make Good Fortune was because he “had been doing some more dramatic work recently and I really wanted to make a comedy and I wanted it to be in theaters.”

“People do want to come to the theater and laugh together. I think we can do it, I don’t think we can say this genre doesn’t work,” Ansari emphasized.

Of the cast, he said, “We had f*cking Keanu man,” and then recounted how Reeves injured himself while filming. “Fifteen days into shooting with me I said go to the dressing room and chill and he tripped on a rug and fractured his kneecap.”

Of Reeves who plays an angel in the movie: “He actually is an angel, this is the first time he’s gotten to play his true form.”

In Good Fortune, Ansari plays a down-on-his-luck guy who is working myriad jobs. He’s called by his friend (played by Seth Rogen), who lives in the Hollywood Hills, to do various jobs for him — put in a disco floor, fix the pool heater. Keanu Reeves “valley” angel makes it so Rogen’s rich guy situation is swapped with Ansari, so the latter has the former’s life.
