‘The Good Fight’: No Plans For Further Reruns Of CBS All Access Series On CBS

The entire first season of The Good Fight, CBS All Access’ sequel to CBS’ The Good Wife, aired on the broadcast network last summer. The move raised the possibility that prior seasons of the streaming drama could get reruns on CBS every summer. That won’t be the case ,Marc DeBevoise, Chief Digital Officer, ViacomCBS, and President and CEO, CBS Interactive, said during the CBS All Access executive session.

“(There is) no plan to run a further season on the broadcast network at this point, but we are very happy with the first‑season run and the ratings over the summer,” he said. “We thought that did a nice job for raising awareness of the service and the show.”

The Good Fight run on on CBS marked the time a CBS All Access show has aired on the broadcast network since the Star Trek: Discovery premiere episode in September 2017.

During The Good Fight panel, creators Michelle and Robert King spoke about editing the streaming show to air on broadcast, noting that the biggest challenge was not adjusting the content but cutting for length to fit into the rigid broadcast slots.

“Most of the editing we did had to do with length, rather than anything,” Michelle King said. “Oftentimes, the episodes can go almost up to an hour, and then at least 50 minutes, as usual, and then, when you’re doing a 42 minute broadcast show, obviously things have to shrink.

Addend Robert King, “We spent a month and quarter cutting those episodes down, and it was hard. But I thought actually a few of them improved, oddly, which that’s not a very good comment on how we were maybe a little bit flabby to begin with. But, yeah, some of those, like, oh, my God, I don’t want to lose that. The tendency is when you cut for plot, you lose a lot of fun character details.”
