The Good Doctor stunned viewers on Tuesday with the death of Dr. Asher Wolke — and on Wednesday, his portrayer, Noah Galvin, took to Instagram to reflect on his four-season stint on the ABC medical drama.

“I spent the last four years in Vancouver working away from my fiancee [sic] and dog and family. It was hard but these people made it really worth it,” Galvin wrote, sharing a series of behind-the-scenes photos featuring his fellow castmates. “I love you @TheGoodDoctorABC thank you for everything!!”

In Season 7, Episode 5 — “Who At Peace” — Dr. Wolke was beaten to death in an antisemitic attack, as his boyfriend Jerome sat a nearby restaurant, waiting to propose. After confronting a pair of vandals who desecrated a synagogue, the assailants snuck up behind him and dealt a fatal blow to his head.

By the time Rabbi Benjamin found Asher, he was already dead.

Galvin joined The Good Doctor in Season 4. Asher, an atheist with a God complex who left the Hasidic community at age 18, was one of six newbies introduced that season, along with Bria Samoné Henderson’s Dr. Jordan Allen. The pair was elevated to series-regular status for Season 5.

Asher began a relationship with St. Bonaventure nurse Jerome (played by recurring guest star Giacomo Baessato) during Season 5. Tuesday’s episode marked the second anniversary of their first date, on which Jerome intended to propose.

Asher’s demise comes at the midway point of The Good Doctor‘s abbreviated final season. Its 10-episode farewell resumes on Tuesday, April 9, with Episode 6 (ABC, 10/9c).
