Abiel Fellows Chapter of DAR recognizes 5 high school seniors as 'Good Citizens'

The Abiel Fellows Chapter of the Daughters of the American Revolution recently recognized five high school seniors who demonstrate the qualities of dependability, service, leadership and patriotism.

Selected by the chapter for the honor of DAR Good Citizen this year were Isabella Kangas of Centreville High School, Lando Schwartz of Constantine High School, Rachel Eggleston of Howardsville Christian School, Ryley Mullin of Mendon High School and Chase Evans of Three Rivers High School.

Mullin and her parents, Steven and Emily Mullin, attended an awards reception held April 10 at the Carnegie Center for the Arts in Three Rivers.

Chapter Good Citizen Chair Rebecca Shank shared that Mullin served as class treasurer, Student Senate Representative, co-president of National Honor Society and yearbook eBusiness admin and lead designer.

She earned all A’s all year, numerous academic and athletic awards, played volleyball and basketball, and participated with Special Olympics Project Unify, Quiz Bowl, Southwest 10 Leadership Conference and Prom Committee.

Mullin’s community service includes food distributions, officiating for basketball, recording stats at track meets, tutoring, leading kids’ games at Riverfest, altar serving at church, and doing cleanups at church and in the village.

She works at Mullin’s Auto Service, EWJ Clean Hornet Car Wash, Mullin’s Business Service, and does childcare.

Dual-enrolled at Glen Oaks Community College, Mullin plans to attend Michigan Technological University majoring in mechanical engineering and minoring in business.

Guest speaker St. Joseph County Prosecutor David Marvin shared his history of growing up in Three Rivers and learning the value of hard work.

In the 20 years he lived around the world including China and Hong Kong, he came to appreciate the American system of laws, protections and freedoms.

“It’s the best there is,” he said.

Previously residing in Grand Rapids, he brought his son back to St. Joseph County because of the values in the community.

“Independent thinking, hard work and self-reliance: that’s what makes us great,” he said.

As prosecutor – the county’s top law enforcement officer – he strives to ensure laws are enforced correctly.

He also encourages individuals to take responsibility for their actions, so they don’t appear in court in the first place.

“That’s how the community is stronger,” he said.
