‘Gomorrah’ Sneak Peek: Is the Mobster Drama Your New Binge-watch?

Fans of classic American crime dramas like The Sopranos and The Wire, take note: Sundance TV’s debut of the Italian TV drama Gomorrah — that country’s most popular TV series of all time — may be your next lean-in, must-obsess-about series.

It’s based on Roberto Saviano’s nonfiction book of the same title about a real mob family in Italy, a tell-all so light-shedding and death threat-sparking that the author has required 24/7 bodyguards for the past eight years. Gomorrah, premiering Aug. 24, revolves around the Savastano family, including Don Pietro, his wife, Imma, and son Gennaro (“Genny”), whose family dynamics and business rivalries will be more than a little familiar to those who watched Tony Soprano juggle the pressures of family and “family.”

And though watching the series via subtitles might take a minute to get used to, the series more than makes up for it with some stellar, cinematic-quality action scenes, like the one in the series premiere sneak peek above, which finds Don Pietro’s right-hand man, Ciro — and some innocent café dwellers — on the receiving end of explosive rival Mafia vengeance.

P.S. Feel free to get invested in what these gangsters are up to: A second season of Gomorrah aired earlier this year in Europe, and additional seasons are already in the planning stages.

Watch a quick who’s who:

Gomorrah premieres Aug. 24 at 10 p.m. on Sundance TV.
