While this is the first live-action cinematic adaptation of the manga, it was previously adapted into an anime and an original net animation (under the title, Golden Dōga Gekijō). As of 2024, the anime has four seasons. Geno Studio developed the first three seasons, with Brain’s Base developing the fourth.

Plot – what’s the story about?

Set after the Russo-Japanese War, Golden Kamuy follows Saichi Sugimoto and Asirpa, as they search for a semi-legendary treasure.

Because of his actions during the historical battle of 203 Hill, Saichi earned the moniker the “Immoral Sugimoto.” However, his experience in the army has left him disillusioned. When the story begins, he is supporting the widow of a fallen comrade. He learns about the treasure from an incoherent former convict. After Asirpa, an Ainu woman, saves his life, he asks her to join him in his search. The latter agrees, though her real intention is to exact revenge on the people responsible for her father’s death.
