New network, new bosses, brand new deal for venue the Beverly Hilton with striking hotel workers, and really hoping to turn a new page, the Golden Globes this morning rolled out their nominations. There was something for everybody, almost.

Back on CBS for the first time since 1982 when the now disbanded Hollywood Foreign Press Association scandalously crowned Pia Zadora as the new star of the year, the 2024 Globes will have the added juice of coming off an NFL doubleheader on January 7. Today, as performers, agents and flacks all over LA put an extra shot of caffeine in their pre-dawn coffee and some hot mic delays, Cedric the Entertainer and NCIS star Wilmer Valderrama unveiled the contenders live for the first major award show of the new year.

There were a lot of familiar names and familiar nominations today, but this year the Globes also introduced two new categories. For the first time, there’s Globes for Best Cinematic and Box Office Achievement (aka Hail, the blockbusters) and Best Performance in Stand-up Comedy on Television (aka Hola Netflix)

Unsurprisingly, it was a good morning for Barbie, the final season of Succession, The Bear and Oppenheimer. However, for the legendary Harrison Ford and new version of The Color Purple – well, as that old Boomtown Rats song says, they might not like Mondays so much right now.

With that, here are the big snubs and surprises from the 81st Golden Globes nominations. Did we miss anyone or any flick or series? Drop a line with your suggestions.

SNUBS

Harrison Ford
There was some 1923 love for Helen Mirren and the show itself Monday, but her rather well-known co-star got left back on the back 40…both for the Taylor Sheridan Yellowstone prequel series and, big shocker, AppleTV+’s Shrinking.

The Color Purple
The new Globes voters may be the most diverse ever according to the organization’s president Helen Hoehne, but no Best Motion Picture – Musical of Comedy nomination for Warner Brothers’ new version of the Alice Walker originated story? No, that ain’t right. Plus, Fantasia Barrino and Danielle Brooks were nominated for their performances, but nada for Taraji P. Henson in the Supporting Category? No.

America Ferrera
There was a lot of Barbie in Globesworld today, so much so you could paint the award pink. Yet, somehow past Globes winner Ferrera, the emotional heart of the Greta Gerwig-helmed blockbuster, got nothin’.

Reservation Dogs
For its widely acclaimed third and final season, the genre busting and groundbreaking Sterlin Harjo and Taika Waititi-created Indigenous American series was shunned by Globes voters. Shame, on all levels.

Ferrari
No Globes gas in the tank for Michael Mann’s Adam Driver-led fast and fierce film.

John Mulaney
In many ways it’s been Mulaney’s year, but his Baby J stand-up depiction of rehab, rebirth, and birth got zero love in the debut of the Best Performance in Stand-up Comedy on TV category.

Napoleon
Globes voters decided Ridley Scott’s emperor had no clothes. And to give no chance to Vanessa Kirby? C’est juste un crime historique.

Aunjanue Ellis
The multiple Emmy nominee delivered a powerhouse of a performance in Origin, Ava DuVernay’s first feature in five years. However, no Midas touch for this past Golden Globes nominee today.

Nicolas Braun
How was Cousin Greg literally the only major member of the Succession cast to not share in the Globes nominations wealth this AM?

Viola Davis
Air was flying high this morning, except the EGOT actress got held down.

Sterling K. Brown
They say truth is stranger than fiction, and it was certainly odd that the This Is Us actor was overlooked today for his American Fiction supporting actor stint.

SURPRISES

Gary Oldman
The Oscar winner rarely turns in any less than an award-winning performance, but not many had the Slow Horses star in this race this year – and it’s all become a bit more interesting by Oldman’s presence. Though it will take some serious spycraft to figure out why the series itself was snubbed.

Taylor Swift
Nobody loves getting stars in the Hilton ballroom like the Globes, and rebrand or not, clearly they are going to move Heaven and Earth to get Taylor there for Jan. 7 and CBS’ cameras. That desire to get a Swift ratings bounce, a fav of the NFL the past few months, resulted in the megastar’s Taylor Swift: The Eras Tour concert flick appearing in the new  Cinematic and Box Office Achievement category alongside Barbie, John Wick Chapter 4, Guardians of the Galaxy Vol 3, Oppenheimer, Mission Impossible – Dead Reckoning Part 1, The Super Mario Bros Movie and Spider-Man: Across the Spider-Verse. Not bad for a $250 million success at the box office, which is now the highest grossing concert flick of all time.

Elle Fanning
The Great is now gone, but it’s pretty great the actress who gave us the series’ Catherine the Great got a nomination this morning.

Nicolas Cage
He’s so back, baby!
