Golden Globes Set 2024 Nominations Date And Timeline, Tim Gray As Part Of New Membership Board In Continuing Revamp

The Golden Globes, which is embarking on a new era after it was acquired by Dick Clark Productions and Eldridge from longtime operator the Hollywood Foreign Press Association earlier this summer, on Thursday revealed its new membership board of directors and timeline for the 2024 awards, which take place January 7.

Organizers said today that the Golden Globes nominations for the 81st edition will be announced Monday, December 11. (See the full timeline below.) Still to come: naming a broadcaster for the ceremony, after its most recent deal with NBC ended with this year’s show. Discussions have been held with outlets including NBC, and an announcement on a new deal is expected by October 2, organizers said today. We hear the ceremony will likely stay at its longtime home at the Beverly Hilton.

The 2023 ceremony, hosted by Jarrod Carmichael, was the first after a year’s absence from TV following a restructure at the HFPA hastened by backlash amid revelations of the organization’s practices and lack of diversity among members.

Amid the reforms in the aftermath was the creation of a new membership board to select, ratify and accredit journalists as Globes voting members. Dcp said today that board, headed by Golden Globes president Helen Hoehne, will include Tim Gray, the longtime former awards editor and SVP at Variety, who joins the Golden Globes organization immediately as EVP.

Other board members revealed today: Judy Lung, VP Public Relations & Communications for the Toronto Film Festival; entrepreneur and inspirational speaker Neil Phillips; Javier Porta Fouz, professor and artistic director of the Buenos Aires International Festival of Independent Cinema; and current journalists and Globes members Gerardo Prat, Elisabeth Sereda and Barbaros Tapan. One more member of the nine-member board is still to be announced.

The Globes were acquired in June by dick clark productions, the show’s longtime producer. Dcp in January had been acquired by Penske Media Eldridge, part of a push for Eldridge to augment its existing partnership with Penske Media Corp’s entertainment media brands and SXSW. (PME is a PMC subsidiary and joint venture between Penske Media Corporation and Eldridge. PMC is also the parent company of Deadline.)

As part of the DCP deal, the HFPA’s philanthropic arm was spun off and the HFPA was shuttered.

“We are proud of how the Golden Globes has evolved over the past two years and where the organization is headed,” Hoehne said today. “With its unique international footprint and global perspective on the entertainment world, this esteemed and trusted board truly sets the Golden Globes apart as an organization intent on recognizing achievements in film and television with superior credibility and integrity.”

The 2023 Globes winners included the likes of The Fabelmans and The Banshees of Inisherin, which went on to get Oscar Best Picture nominations, and eventual Oscar winners Michelle Yeoh and Ke Huy Quan. In TV, House of the Dragon, Abbott Elementary and The White Lotus were the series winner. The ceremony drew 6.3 million viewers, an all-time low and following the recent ratings trend of televised awards shows.
