Yorgos Lanthimos’ science fantasy black comedy “Poor Things” took home the Golden Globe for Best Motion Picture – Musical or Comedy on Sunday night.

The film, which stars Emma Stone, Mark Ruffalo, Willem Dafoe and Ramy Youssef, had already won the Golden Lion, the top prize at the 80th Venice International Film Festival, in September.

When Lanthimos accepted Sunday’s award, he joked, “I just wanted to speak to Bruce Springsteen all night,” pointing to the singer in the audience.

He told Springsteen that he shared the same birthday as him (Sept. 23), and thanked him for “making me grow up the way I did.” He also thanked the Emma Stone, calling her simply “the best.”

“Poor Things,” written by Tony McNamara, was based on the 1992 novel by Alasdair Gray of the same name.

It’s plot centers on Bella Baxter, a pregnant Victorian woman who attempts suicide but is resurrected by a scientist who replaces her brain with that of her unborn infant.

Baxter subsequently learns about the world and eventually escapes with a debauched lawyer and goes on a journey of self-discovery and sexual liberation.

Stone called the film a “rom-com” earlier in the evening, saying it was really a story about her character “falling in love with the world.”
