Golden Globes Land At CBS For 2024 Telecast

The Golden Globes have found a new broadcast home. The upcoming 81st edition of the Hollywood awards show on January 7, 2024 will air live on CBS, stream on Paramount+ and be available on the CBS app. This is a marquee slot for the show, which will follow an NFL on CBS Sunday doubleheader and is expected to be supported by a major marketing campaign.

The announcement follows a multi-month search which started after the Golden Globes’ assets, rights and properties were acquired by Dick Clark Productions and Eldridge from the Hollywood Foreign Press Association in June, with the awards show turned into a commercial enterprise and the HFPA dissolved.

The new broadcast partnership succeeds the Globes’ longtime association with NBC and brings the Globes back to CBS where the ceremony aired in 1981 and 1982. It gives CBS two of the top awards shows on TV with the Golden Globes and the Grammys.

“Live entertainment and sports have, and will always be, a hallmark of CBS, and the Globes adds an exciting new dimension to our first quarter schedule this year,” said George Cheeks, President & Chief Executive Officer of CBS. “The January timing also provides the added benefit of yet another signature platform to promote the return of CBS’ new primetime schedule in February.”

The ceremony, which spans film and TV categories, will air live coast-to-coast. Stations in the Pacific time zone that carry the event live will also rebroadcast the entire Golden Globe Awards telecast in prime time immediately following the live presentation.

Under a previous regime, CBS went after the Globes in 2010 but the show remained at NBC where it had been since 1996. In 2018, NBCUniversal signed a new eight-year deal to continue its long-term broadcasting of the Globes until 2026. NBC declined to air the 2022 show after revelations about lack of diversity and questionable business practices at the HFPA, and the ceremony was not televised that year. The network returned as a broadcast partner in 2023 for a telecast, which also streamed on Peacock. It was a one-year agreement that was not extended, launching a search for a new broadcast partner.

The Globes’ network switch comes on the heels of the 2023 show drawing the second-lowest ratings ever (6.3 million viewers). It also comes after two years of efforts on behalf of the Globes to diversify their voting body and implement a new code of conduct.

The 2024 Globes will feature two new categories, Cinematic and Box Office Achievement and Best Stand-Up Comedian on Television.

Glenn Weiss and Ricky Kirshner of White Cherry Entertainment serve as executive producing showrunners for the 81st Golden Globe Awards, with Weiss also set to direct. The awards show, viewed in more than 185 countries worldwide, is produced and owned by Dick Clark Productions.
