Golden Globes 2020: Michelle Williams tells women to vote 'your own self-interest' like men

Michelle Williams has a message for women: Vote.

At the Golden Globes Sunday, the 39-year-old actress encouraged ladies to claim their power and vote in "your own self-interest" while accepting an award for the best performance by an actress in a limited series or television movie. She won for her work on FX's "Fosse/Verdon."

"So women, 18 to 118, when it is time to vote, please do so in your own self interest," Williams said. "It's what men have been doing for years… which is why the world looks so much like them. Don't forget we are the largest voting body in this country. Let's make it look more like us."

Williams expressed how grateful she is to live in a society where women have the right to choose, because "as women and as girls, things can happen to our bodies that are not our choice."

"I've tried my very best to live a life of my own making and not just a series of events that happened to me," she continued. "But one that I could stand back and look at and recognize my handwriting all over it – sometimes messy and scrawling, sometimes careful and precise, but one that I have carved with my own hand."

Williams added: "I wouldn't have been able to do this without employing a woman's right to choose. To choose when to have my children and with whom. When I felt supported and able to balance our lives, knowing as all mothers know that the scales must and will tilt towards our children."

Her remark about having children had increased significance following reports from People and E! News that Williams is expecting a child with her new director fiancé, Thomas Kail. The couple made their first red carpet appearance together earlier Sunday , but Williams kept her baby bump hidden undera long orange gown.

"Tommy and Matilda, I can't wait to come home to you," Williams concluded her speech, referring to Kail and her 14-year-old daughter with ex Heath Ledger, who died in 2008.

This is not the first time Williams has delivered a powerpolitical message at an awards show. At the 71st Emmys in 2019, the actress advocated for equal pay during her acceptance speech.
