And the Golden Globe for Best Actor in a Drama Series Goes to…
Next up at the winner's microphone is—drumroll, please—Josh O’Connor!
During tonight’s 78th annual Golden Globes, O’Connor won the award for Best Performance by an Actor in a Television Series, Drama for his role as Charles, Prince of Wales in The Crown.
He beat out Jason Bateman for Ozark (played Martin “Marty” Byrde), Bob Odenkirk for Better Call Saul (played Saul Goodman), Al Pacino for Hunters (played Meyer Offerman) and Matthew Rhys for Perry Mason (played Perry Mason).
This particular honor was first awarded at the 19th Golden Globe Awards on March 5, 1962, under the title Best TV Star-Male, grouping all genres of television series together. The award honored actors in both comedy and drama genres until 1969, when it was split into categories that honored comedic and dramatic performances separately (thank goodness).
Previous winners include Brian Cox for Succession, Richard Madden for Bodyguard, Sterling K. Brown for This Is Us, Billy Bob Thornton for Goliath, Jon Hamm for Mad Men, Bryan Cranston for Breaking Bad, Damian Lewis for Homeland, Kelsey Grammer for Boss and Steve Buscemi for Boardwalk Empire.
The 78th annual Golden Globes were hosted by Amy Poehler and Tina Fey, who virtually tuned in from opposite sides of the country. (The pair previously served as hosts in 2013, 2014 and 2015.)
There’s no doubt there was some seriously steep competition this year, but O’Connor definitely deserved the win.
