‘The Golden Girls’ and ‘Gilmore Girls’ Team to Develop Gay Senior Citizen Comedy ‘Silver Foxes’
Super Deluxe is developing “Silver Foxes,” a new gay comedy series from “The Golden Girls” collaborators Stan Zimmerman and James Berg, Variety reported. The duo has previously written and/or produced for “Roseanne” and “Gilmore Girls,” in addition to creating the Lifetime series “Rita Rocks” in 2008. George Takei, Leslie Jordan, Cheri Oteri, and Bruce Vilanch all participated in early readings of the script.
The series is inspired by the 2011 documentary “Gen Silent,” which exposed the discrimination LGBTQ seniors experience in nursing homes. The half-hour, single camera series follows two older gay men and a younger twink who rescue a friend from a closeted life at a homophobic assisted living facility. They bring him back to their mid-century Palm Springs home for a life of friends and fabulousness.
“Every one of us is getting older,” said Zimmerman. “Especially with gays and lesbians and transgender [people], we create our own families—and that’s what ‘The Golden Girls’ did. Those women came together and supported each other.”

Super Deluxe, which is owned by Turner Broadcasting, is developing the series to be shopped to a streaming or cable network. Super Deluxe recently produced the deaf comedy series “This Close” for AMC Networks’ Sundance Now, and is currently working on the supernatural drama “Chambers” for Netflix. The company is also adapting the 1985 classic gay film “My Beautiful Laundrette” into a series with Kumail Nanjiani attached to co-write and co-star. It also produced the award-winning short film “Bayard & Me,” about legendary civil rights activist Bayard Rustin, who adopted his younger partner before same-sex marriage was even conceivable.
