‘The Golden Bachelor’ Reveals 22 Women Vying for Senior Star

The Golden Bachelor contestants have made their debut.
Twenty-two women will be vying for a final rose from Gerry Turner, the 71-year-old widower who will be leading the ABC franchise’s highly anticipated senior dating spinoff when it premieres Sept. 28.

The Golden Bachelor format will be similar to that of flagship shows The Bachelor and The Bachelorette, except that Turner will be dating from a group of eligible women in his age cohort. The looking-for-love contestants were revealed on Wednesday and they range from 60 to 75 years old. The group is one of “accomplished golden ladies” who “will take time away from their established home lives, friends and family in the quest to rediscover love,” said ABC.
Among the women — who hail from all over the country and are a mix of retirees and professionals ranging from educators to a wedding officiant and a pro-aging coach — is one familiar face: Patty James, the mother of former Bachelor star Matt James who memorably appeared on his 2021 season.
A retired restaurateur, Turner lives on a lake in Indiana. He was married 43 years to his high school sweetheart, Toni, who suddenly fell ill from a bacterial infection and died in 2017. He is the father to two daughters and grandfather to two granddaughters. ABC described him as a “charming 71-year-old patriarch” when he was announced earlier this summer as the star of the golden years-era spinoff, which has been in the works since early 2020.
Turner made his primetime TV debut during the reunion show for the 20th season of The Bachelorette, which recently concluded its season with Charity Lawson getting engaged to Dotun Olubeko. Turner, who joked with host Jesse Palmer about fans referring to him as a “grand zaddy” on social media, said of his expectations: “What I look for at the age of 70 is different from what I looked for in high school and college. So, I believe I’ll find my person — the new person that will make me whole again. And I think we’ll knit a wonderful relationship. But I don’t think it’ll look like the relationship I had with Toni. And I don’t think it would be right to do it that way.”
The Golden Bachelor and the ninth season of Bachelor in Paradise return back-to-back on Sept. 28, moving the long-running Monday/Tuesday night franchise over to Thursdays as part of ABC’s reworked fall schedule amid the ongoing WGA and SAG-AFTRA strikes. The Bachelor, meanwhile, has also been renewed for a forthcoming 28th season.

Christina is extremely proud of her career, and while she’s retired now, working her way up the corporate ladder without a college degree is still one of her biggest accomplishments. Christina loves playing pickleball, listening to Paul McCartney, and horseback riding. She also isn’t afraid of adventure and has plans to go skydiving (for a second time) with her oldest grandson.
