The Goldbergs creator pays tribute to George Segal: 'We lost a legend'

George Segal, the Oscar-nominated actor known for his work in Who's Afraid of Virginia Woolf, Just Shoot Me, The Goldbergs, and more, died Tuesday of complications from bypass surgery, and tributes immediately came pouring in on social media.

"On behalf of everyone at the Goldberg's we are devastated at the loss of our dear friend, George," read a statement from the show. "He was kind, sweet, beyond talented and funny. George was the true epitome of class and he touched all of our lives so deeply. It was an honor and a privilege to have him as a colleague and friend all of these years. It is no surprise to any of us that knew him so well that he is a true national treasure. He will be missed by all. POPS, we will miss your banjo playing and your infectious laugh. Rest in peace."

The Goldbergs creator Adam F. Goldberg, who cast Segal as the onscreen version of his grandfather, shared some of his favorite photos of Segal on Twitter. "Today we lost a legend," he wrote. "It was a true honor being a small part of George Segal's amazing legacy. By pure fate, I ended up casting the perfect person to play Pops. Just like my grandfather, George was a kid at heart with a magical spark. I think these memories say it all..."

Wendi McLendon-Covey, who played Segal's daughter on The Goldbergs, shared a sweet photo of the two of them together on Instagram. "Didn't know the last time I saw you would be the last time I'd see you," she wrote.

"For eight years, George Segal made us laugh as Pops on The Goldbergs, but his legacy in the entertainment world spans decades," ABC Entertainment said in a statement. "His talent has left an indelible mark and we're grateful for the laughter and joy he has given us all. Our thoughts and deepest condolences are with his wife, Sonia, and his family during this difficult time."

Sony Pictures Television released a statement saying, "We are deeply saddened to learn of the passing of George Segal. He was a true icon and legend in this business and an integral member of our Sony family. George brightened the screen whenever he was on camera and was a warm and genuine gentleman. Our hearts, thoughts and prayers go out to his family and loved ones. We will miss him greatly."
