Gold-leaf burger? Get yours at soon-to-launch Steve's Burgers food truck

Love Steve's Burgers, the unpretentious, no-frills North Jersey burger mini-chain? It serves what many burger lovers maintain are the best burgers in North Jersey, if not the Garden State.

Starting in October, you'll be able to get those burgers, including a gold-leaf burger (more on that later) — at food festivals and at private events. Your birthday bash, perhaps?

Chef and owner Stephen Chrisomalis has put aside for the moment his goal of opening another brick-and-mortar Steve's Burgers — he has three currently; two in Garfield and one in North Bergen — and instead decided to launch a food truck. Chrisomalis has partnered with home baker Zilpa Rizzo of Zilpa's Desserts in Garfield, whose cheesecake empanadas currently are sold at Steve's Burgers. Their new venture is called Steve'z on Wheels.

"I'm testing the waters," Chrisomalis said. "A food truck is much easier than a brick-and-mortar, more cost-effective and very big now. I want to tap into the market."

Chrisomalis said that the truck will offer a smaller menu that will include burgers of course, including a burger exclusive to the truck. What's in it, besides Steve's classic six-ounce patty, gooey American cheese, crisp bacon, caramelized onion rings, lettuce, tomatoes and Steve's secret sauce? Gold leaf, an ingredient not often — ever? — associated with burgers, America's national dish. "It's a masterpiece," said Chrisomalis.

Also on the menu: Truffle fries, hot dogs, cheesesteak, Cuban sandwiches and Rizzo's cheesecake empanadas. The truck will offer custom packages for private events.

"I'm so excited," said Chrisomalis. "I can’t wait. Once I launch the first truck, I’m hoping to explode it. I'm hoping to have lots more trucks."
