Godzilla vs Kong, the monster movie whose plot needs no explanation, released on March 31 in the US simultaneously in cinemas and on HBO Max.

Deadline quotes WarnerMedia head Andy Forssell as saying that the movie "had a larger viewing audience than any other film or show on HBO Max since launch".

The publication also reports that third-party streaming ratings firm Samba TV is showing that 3.6 million households have watched at least the first five minutes of the film across its first five days.

Although that figure only includes data from smart TVs, when compared against HBO Max's second-biggest film, Wonder Woman 1984, using the same metrics, its 3.6 million trumps the DC heroine's 2.2 million.

In terms of traditional cinema, Godzilla vs Kong is currently the third highest-grossing film of 2021, and the highest Western film in that list. Two Chinese movies, Hi, Mom and Detective Chinaman 3, hold the top spots, with their respective $821 million and $688 million grosses dwarfing Godzilla vs Kong's $300 million.

Warner has confirmed that, for the rest of 2021 at least, practically all of its films will be released in cinemas and on HBO Max at the same time, in a pretty controversial move.

The films will only be free for subscribers for a limited time, with Godzilla vs Kong only being available at no extra cost until April 30.

Godzilla vs Kong is available to rent at home in the UK from Prime Video, iTunes and other participating digital retailers, while it is available to watch now in US cinemas and on HBO Max in the US.
