‘Godzilla: Resurgence’ Trailer: Guess Who’s Back in Tokyo...

Gareth Edwards’ 2014 Godzilla reboot was positively smashing, with the radioactive lizard monster reducing both Honolulu and San Francisco to rubble. But for Godzilla purists, there’s nothing like seeing the giant wreaking havoc in its traditional stomping grounds of Tokyo. Enter Godzilla: Resurgence, the new creature feature from Japan’s legendary Toho Studios, which created the iconic movie monster in 1954. In the wake of Edwards’ box office hit, Toho vowed to get back into the Godzilla game, and defied tradition by using digital effects in addition to the somewhat goofy “man in a rubber suit” aesthetic that defined its earlier movies.

Watch the just-released trailer above for Resurgence, which opens in Japan in July, and you’ll see the studio is serious about making Godzilla scary. It’s also not shy about showing the creature off, something that Edwards controversially avoided doing in his own film where Godzilla only appeared in full for eight minutes. Toho’s lizard, on the other hand, isn’t hiding from anyone, swinging his tail and stomping his feet all over Japan’s terrified populace. Now that’s the Gojira we know and love.
