Godzilla Minus One Black-and-White Version Sets United States Release Date

The black-and-white version of Godzilla Minus One, Godzilla Minus One Minus Color, is coming to AMC Theatres later this month.

According to the AMC Theatres website, per Bloody Disgusting, Godzilla Minus One Minus Color will begin playing in the United States on Friday, January 26, 2024. The movie will be shown in United States theaters for one week only.

What is Godzilla Minus One Minus Color?

On December 20, 2023, director Takashi Yamazaki announced that Godzilla Minus One would debut in black-and-white in Japan on January 12, 2024.

Referred to as Godzilla Minus One/C in Japan, Yamazaki said, via Fangoria, about the black-and-white version of the movie, “We are now able to announce Godzilla-1.0/C, which we have been working on for a long time. Rather than just making it monochrome, it is a cut by cut, I had them make adjustments while making full use of various mattes, as if they were creating a new movie. What I was aiming for was a style that looked like it was taken by masters of monochrome photography. We were able to unearth the texture of the skin and the details of the scenery that were hidden in the photographed data. Then, a frightening Godzilla, just like the one in the documentary, appeared. By eliminating color, a new sense of reality emerges. Please live and resist further fear at the theater.”

Directed by Yamazaki, Godzilla Minus One stars Ryunosuke Kamiki, Minami Hamabe, Yuki Yamada, Munetaka Aoki, Hidetaka Yoshioka, Sakura Ando, and Kuranosuke Sasaki. Marking the first Toho Godzilla movie since 2016’s Shin Godzilla (which Yamazaki worked on the visual effects for), the movie has so far made almost $100 million at the global box office with a budget of less than $15 million.

Godzilla Minus One Minus Color debuts in AMC Theatres on January 26, 2024. The colorized version of Godzilla Minus One is also still playing in United States theaters.
