Godzilla 2 director shares first rough look at the beast

Godzilla 2: Monster revealed in first look from director

It’s a face only its millions of fans could love, and it’s almost back.

As Godzilla: King of the Monsters continues stomping towards its 2019 release date with Krampus director Michael Dougherty leading the charge, the filmmaker released the first very rough image of the monster’s return.

In a photo from the 69th day of filming, Dougherty unleashed a photo from the set with a CG image of the titular creature roaring back to life on a screen. Millie Bobby Brown (Stranger Things), Kyle Chandler (Bloodline), Vera Farmiga (The Conjuring 2), and O’Shea Jackson Jr. (Straight Outta Compton) feature in King of the Monsters, set for release on March 22, 2019.

Gareth Edwards directed 2014’s Godzilla, which saw nature’s guardian rise from the sea to do battle against gargantuan beasts. Based on what we know is coming, humanity will need Godzilla’s help again.

This cinematic universe expanded with Jordan Vogt-Roberts’ Kong: Skull Island, which ended with a post-credits scene that teased the introduction of classic monsters Mothra, Rodan, and the three-headed King Ghidorah.

Following King of the Monsters, Godzilla vs. Kong from Blair Witch and Death Note helmer Adam Wingard will hit theaters on May 22, 2020.

“The original film [1962’s King Kong vs. Godzilla] was very fun, but you feel a little let down that the movie doesn’t take a definitive stance,” Wingard told EW. “People are still debating now who won in that original movie, you know. So, I do want people to walk away from this film feeling like, Okay, there is a winner.”
