Gobblefunk: Steven Spielberg and Cast Get You Caught Up on 'BFG' Glossary Terms
The film adaptation of the classic children’s book, The BFG, opens this weekend. And along with the movie comes the wonderful world of gobblefunk. Gobblefunk is described in a fan blog as author Roald Dahl’s own language, which is used across his literature when his dream worlds transcend normal adjectives.
To get you caught up before you hopscotchy yourself into the theater, we sat down with director Steven Spielberg and some of the film’s stars, including Jemaine Clement, Ruby Barnhill, Rebecca Hall, and Oscar-winner Mark Rylance, to help us break it all down.
Don’t be alarmed if the aforementioned hopscotchy had you scratching your head; Rylance wasn’t sure what it was either. That’s where Spielberg’s expertise comes in.
“Well hopscotchy is what he did when he went from human country to giant country,” Spielberg said about the film’s titular character.
Of course, as any good conversation about gobblefunk should, things wrapped up with a quick reminder about whizpopping. An easy explanation is that it involves passing gas, but Clement described it more creatively as “literally uplifting,” while Rylance called it “an elevating experience.”
The BFG opens nationwide on Friday.
