Glenn Close Says Winning Her First Oscar After 7 Nominations Would Be 'Thrilling'

Could it finally be Glenn Close’s time?

On Tuesday, she was nominated for her seventh Academy Award, making her the actress with the most nominations and no wins — yet. With eight nominations and no wins, Peter O’Toole holds the record for the most-nominated actor with no big prize.

Close stands a strong shot at winning for her lead performance in The Wife, for which she won a Golden Globe and Critics Choice Award (where she tied with A Star Is Born‘s Lady Gaga).

While doing press for The Wife late last year, long ahead of her seventh nomination, Close opened up about what winning her first Oscar would mean for her.

“First of all, how thrilling that would be,” Close told PEOPLE’s Editor-in-Chief Jess Cagle in an episode of The Jess Cagle Interview (streaming on PeopleTV). “I’ve survived in this business for what, 43 years? Then it becomes kind of great to never win in a way, I guess. [Laughs]”

“I’m a pragmatic Yankee and I’ve forced myself to not believe in anything until it happens,” she added. “[The Wife] is a little independent film! No one wanted to make a movie called The Wife. Most of the money came from Europe.”

In The Wife, the 71-year-old actress plays a woman living in the shadow of her Nobel Prize winning husband, played by Jonathan Pryce, also 71.
