Glen Powell is reflecting on his breakup with ex-girlfriend Gigi Paris from earlier this year.

While speaking with Insider about his new movie Anyone But You costarring Sydney Sweeney, the actor, 35, spoke about the rumors after he and Sweeney, 26, touted their chemistry during a promotional appearance for the rom-com at CinemaCon in Las Vegas back in April.

"Well, look, the only reason it made things harder for me to lean into that stuff was that I was going through a very real breakup amidst a promotional tour," Powell said of his and Sweeney's decision to "lean in" to their onscreen chemistry.

"I was with someone that I really loved and cared about and was trying to kind of make sense of a lot of stuff," he shared. "It was a lot easier for Sydney to lean into something like that because she's in a very committed and wonderful relationship and she's very happy. So it was a little harder for me."

A source told PEOPLE shortly after that CinemaCon appearance that Powell and Paris had broken up a number of weeks beforehand. At the time, the source said the pair "had been on the rocks since Top Gun came out" in 2022 and had broken up several times in the past.

"Gigi was never happy with the long-distance filming, and when she came to Australia [where Powell was filming Anyone But You] they both decided to break up for good," the source said at the time.

Sweeney is engaged to Jonathan Davino; PEOPLE confirmed their engagement back in March 2022.

"I'll pretty much give Sydney all the credit for this. I don't have the mental capacity to pull anything like this off, but she's very smart. She's very smart," Powell told Insider, when asked about the pair taking on their characters' dynamic during Anyone But You's press tour.

"And look, Sydney and I do have authentic chemistry — I had such a wonderful journey with her on this thing. But in terms of actual dating and actually being together?" he added, as the outlet noted he laughed off the idea he and Sweeney had an off-screen romance.

Powell, who said to Entertainment Weekly that he grew up a romantic "because of my parents," told Bustle about being single.

“I've been talking to some people in my life and they're like, ‘Glen, you're a single guy. I know you're trying to do all the right things in all the right ways, but you just have to embrace that those failures will be a little more public, a little more hurtful than maybe most people, maybe a little more embarrassing, but it's okay," he said. "But when you're going to fall, and you will inevitably fall in love, it'll work.' "

Sweeney recently opened up about her businesman fiancé in an interview with Glamour UK, saying he is a co-producer on Anyone But You.

“I’ve been in a steady relationship for a really long time, which is not normal in this industry and not normal for my age," she told that outlet. "What I’ve noticed about the idea of celebrity is people really love to build someone up, and then tear them down."

Anyone But You is in theaters now.
