GLAAD Presenting TV Tropes Panel at ATX Television Festival

The fifth annual ATX Television Festival has rounded out its fest programming with the addition of more panels, screenings and discussions, including a “Bury Your Tropes” panel, presented by GLAAD, which will cover the recent discussion surrounding stereotypical portrayals of LGBTQ characters on television.

“Bury Your Tropes” will take on the recent uproar over television storylines, specifically surrounding the many deaths of lesbian characters, plus the larger conversation about the importance of inclusion and positive representation on TV. Panelists are Bradley Bredeweg (“The Fosters”), Javier Grillo-Marxuach (“Lost,” “The 100”), Krista Vernoff (“Shameless,” “Grey’s Anatomy”), Carter Covington (“Faking It”) and GLAAD’s entertainment media strategist Megan Townsend.

ATX has also added events for Hulu’s “The Path,” the final season of USA’s “Royal Pains,” Freeform’s new series “Guilt,” a sit-down with Shondaland’s Betsy Beers, a master class with Howard Gordon and “Power(ful) TV,” a panel discussing TV as an agent of positive social change.

“The Path” will head down to Austin, Texas, for a screening and panel with creator Jessica Goldberg and exec producer Jason Katims. This year marks Goldberg’s first time at ATX as a panelist. Katims will also be in town for the previously announced “Friday Night Lights” reunion.

Celebrating the final season of “Royal Pains,” ATX will host a special screening and panel with cast members Mark Feuerstein, Henry Winkler, Paulo Costanzo, Brooke D’Orsay, Reshma Shetty and Ben Shenkman, along with creator Andrew Lenchewski and exec producer Michael Rauch.

“Guilt,” Freeform’s upcoming summer crime mystery series, will have a screening and panel with co-creator Kathryn Price, exec producer/writer Todd Slavkin and a yet-to-be-announced cast member.

Shondaland’s Beers will sit down for a discussion during which she will talk about the inner workings of Shondaland and hits “Grey’s Anatomy,” “Scandal” and “How To Get Away with Murder.”

Gordon of “24” and “Homeland” fame will hold a master class at ATX, reflecting on his career successes and failures, mentors and protégés over the years. Previously announced, Gordon will also be on the fest’s “Tyrant” panel.

“Power(ful) TV” is being presented by the Television Academy. The panel will focus on TV’s ability to influence social change, covering topics including race, religion, the foster care system, immigration, abortion and health care. The panel will be led by the Television Academy’s president and COO Maury McIntyre with panelists Jason Katims (“The Path,” “Friday Night Lights,” “Parenthood”), Bradley Bredeweg (“The Fosters”), Jennie Snyder Urman (“Jane the Virgin”), Mike Royce (“Men of a Certain Age”) and Jack Amiel (“The Knick”).

ATX will also ahve a panel with Matt Hullum and Burnie Burns, co-founders of the studio Rooster Teeth, who will discuss the company’s new shows “Day 5” and “Crunch Time.”

All of these events join previously announced ATX programming including “The West Wing” panel, which will be moderated by MSNBC’s Lawrence O’Donnell, an “Ugly Betty” reunion, TVLand’s “Younger,” Lifetime’s “UnReal” and more. ATX hits Austin, Texas, from June 9-12.
