GLAAD Media Awards Nominations: ‘Love, Simon’, ‘Crazy Rich Asians’, And ‘Pose’ Recognized For LGBTQ Inclusion
The nominations for the 30th annual GLAAD Media Awards came to slay Friday morning in Park City among the Sundance Film Festival hoopla. Pose star Mj Rodriguez and Crazy Rich Asians star Nico Santos unveiled the nominees via livestream on Facebook which included their respective groundbreaking projects.
Joining Crazy Rich Asians in the Outstanding Film – Wide Release category are the Greg Berlanti’s Love, Simon, the Kay Cannon comedy Blockers, the foul-mouthed superhero romp Deadpool 2, and Sony’s The Girl in the Spider’s Web. On the TV front, Pose is nominated for Outstanding Drama Series alongside Billions, Black Lightning, Grey’s Anatomy, The Handmaid’s Tale, Instinct, Shadowhunters, Star, Supergirl, and Wynonna Earp.

GLAAD also made some changes to their nominations list this, expanding the Outstanding Film – Limited Release category from five to ten nominees to mark a banner year for fair, accurate, and inclusive LGBTQ images in film including The Favourite, Boy Erased, The Miseducation of Cameron Post, and Hearts Beat Loud. This year also marks the inaugural nominees for Outstanding Video Game category to celebrate increased LGBTQ inclusion as GLAAD works to grow representation in the video game industry.
This year marked a nuanced portrayal of the LGBTQ community with streaming services like Netflix, Amazon, and Hulu leading the pack with 11 nominations. There were also several nominations for outstanding portrayals of lesbian and bisexual women as well as transgender people. This year, GLAAD is acknowledging Hanna Gadsby’s critically acclaimed Netflix special Nanette, as well as House of Mamis, an online docuseries about the Mexico City ballroom scene from INTOMore.com. The very timely documentary TransMilitary, which chronicles the lives of several transgender Americans in the U.S. military will also be recognized.
The GLAAD Media Awards ceremonies will hold two ceremonies on both coasts: one in Los Angeles on Thursday, March 28 at The Beverly Hilton, and another in New York on Saturday, May 4 at the Hilton Midtown.
