Agua Caliente donates to five local charities

On Jan. 10, the Agua Caliente Band of Cahuilla Indians presented $225,000 to five charities from the proceeds from the 13th annual Agua Caliente Charity Golf Tournament. A $45,000 check was presented to each of the following charities: ABC Recovery Center Inc., California Indian Nations College, Father’s Heart Ranch, Feathers-N-Fur and Strong Hearted Native Women’s Coalition Inc.

The 13th Annual Agua Caliente Charity Golf Tournament was held at the Tribe’s Indian Canyons Golf Resort in Palm Springs on Dec. 8.

Since opening its first casino in Palm Springs, the Agua Caliente Band of Cahuilla Indians has contributed millions of dollars to local, civic and public service agencies, youth groups, health care organizations, schools, libraries and food banks.

Dr. Carreón Foundation now accepting scholarship applications

Dr. Carreón Foundation announced Jan. 17 that it had officially opened its scholarship application process and is inviting high school seniors and college students to apply for a 2024 scholarship.

The Foundation, which has expanded its mission to include other minority ethnicities in addition to Mexican-American applicants, will accept applications up until March 24.

Qualifications to apply include being a full-time high school senior in the eastern Inland Empire and Blythe or enrolled as a full-time student in college or a trade school; have earned at least a 3.0 unweighted grade point average for all four years of high school work completed; and can demonstrate qualities of good citizenship, leadership and financial need.

Dr. Carreón Foundation has awarded more than $2 million in scholarships to more than 900 students. The scholarship awards for 2023 proved a record-breaking year, awarding nearly 100 students with approximately $270,000. carreonfoundation.org

Tickets on sale for Coachella Valley Media Hall of Fame

As a way of recognizing the passionate commitment of local journalists and media leaders, the Coachella Valley Journalism Foundation will launch the Coachella Valley Media Hall of Fame later this month.

The inaugural inductions will take place at an in-person event Feb. 28, 2024, at Thunderbird Country Club in Rancho Mirage.

The event, which will be emceed by Emmy-award-winning journalist Hank Plante, will also feature former Washington Post editor Martin Baron, who will talk about his new book, "Collision of Power: Trump, Bezos and The Washington Post." Baron will also share his experiences in leading the Post during the Trump presidency as well as his thoughts about the future of journalism.

Tickets are on sale until Feb. 16. To purchase, visit cvjf.org. All proceeds will support local newsrooms and reporters via grantmaking by the Coachella Valley Journalism Foundation.

Bank of America awarded $1.5 million to Inland Empire nonprofits in 2023

As part of its longstanding commitment to supporting economic opportunity in local communities, Bank of America invested $1.5 million across the Inland Empire in 2023 to more than 45 organizations through philanthropic grants and sponsorships to the region’s nonprofits. The support helps nonprofits remove the barriers to economic mobility, with most bank funding directed for workforce development, small business support and affordable housing.

Coachella Valley nonprofits affected include Habitat for Humanity Coachella Valley, College of the Desert Foundation, Desert ARC, FIND Food Bank, Foothill Family Shelter, Martha’s Village & Kitchen, Mizell Center, OneFuture Coachella Valley, Coachella Valley Housing Coalition and Palm Springs International Film Society.

“Inland Empire’s nonprofits know firsthand the needs and obstacles our communities face. Bank of America proudly helps nonprofits to develop the solutions and services needed to promote economic opportunity,” said Bansree Parikh, president, Bank of America Inland Empire. “Bank of America will continue to deploy capital and resources to help create real impact in the lives of the people living in the Inland Empire.”
