'Girls' Series Finale Ends With Struggles of Motherhood

Last week on Girls, we bid a sweet adieu to Hannah Horvath's old life in Brooklyn. Chapters closed on all the characters -- Ray found love. Adam found contentment. Jessa apologized. Shoshanna got engaged. Hannah got a house in the suburbs. And Marnie, well, she was still pretty much Marnie. But in the series finale, it was five months later in the suburbs and it was all about Hannah struggling to connect to her son (literally), as she tried to get Baby Grover to breastfeed. Marnie had opted to help Hannah raise Grover (becoming the truly supportive friend Hannah always craved), but she felt out of her depth as Hannah continued to meltdown. Calling in Hannah's mom for reinforcements, needless to say, made Hannah upset. As Hannah sulked on suburban streets, she ran into an ungrateful teenager that initially seemed like she was running around at night with no pants on because she had been touched inappropriately, but it turned out she was just mad at her mom. As Hannah schooled her on the value of motherhood, she had a realization about her own immaturity. The final image of Girls was Hannah getting Grover to breastfeed, giving us hope, if case you doubted it, that Hannah might do just fine as a mom. In the end, the series finale was something of an epilogue, showing us the beginning of a new journey that Hannah had embarked on. Although some fans voiced disappointment, the episode gave real closure to the hero of Girls and didn't paint a perfect picture of life as a single mother.
