Soshanna Shapiro (Zosia Mamet) is everyone’s favorite speed-talking, fashion-forward, Japanese-traveling girl on “Girls.” Her character– and her style– transform a lot throughout the six seasons. Here is the evolution of Sosh as told through her best hairstyles.

Oh, innocent Sosh. Still a virginal NYU student, she keeps her hair straight and frizz-free.

As we move through season one, her hairstyles become more involved. Ok, we see you, Sosh. You’ve got style.

A snazzy hat shows us more about Soshanna’s style. She is always down to make a statement.

A side pony and a side braid is a bold move. We’re learning that Soshanna is not afraid to be herself.

Here we go. Sosh’s hair is a high as she gets in episode 7 of season 1: “Welcome to Bushwick a.k.a. The Crackcident.”

This fishtail braid is a little confusing. And it’s fitting, because when Sosh wears this in season 2 episode 8, she is confused too – she hooks up with a doorman and questions her relationship with Ray.

In season 2 when Ray tells Soshanna he loves her, we see just how far apart they are, in age and in life. Her pigtail style here shows that difference, especially next to Ray’s ultra-casual style.

Soshanna’s sock bun concoction is another unique display. In this episode, Soshanna gushes over how grown up Charlie’s work party is, and we see how much she wants to be part of the adulting world.

Shoshanna the spy has an up-do that borders on dress-up. In this season 3 episode, Soshanna does some spy work on Ray. We know you’re better than this, Sosh. But your hair does look good.

Short hair, don’t care. Sosh is a college grad and ready to take on adult life. Or at least attempt to.

At Marnie’s wedding, Soshanna is sporting a brand-new platinum blond ‘do. This girl is ready for some life changes.

At her new job in Japan, Soshanna seems to be doing well. She has a great job, a fun nightlife and a burgeoning crush. But we’ll eventually see throughout season 5 that Sosh is a mess inside. Her hair is 3 colors in Japan, revealing the turmoil inside. She can’t make a decision. Girl, make a decision.

Soshanna is impressive: she’s learned Japanese and finds work in Japan even after being let go from the job that initially brought her there. Albeit, that work is at a cat cafe, but Sosh is doin’ what she’s gotta do and shows it through a no-nonsense, pulled back hairstyle. But we still get her personality through the pig tails and hair clips.

Shosh is trying to make an impression at a networking event, so she goes for a trendy half-bun with her own twist. “I’m forward-thinking,” this hairstyle says. Which is true; Soshana tells her friends in this episode that she’s trying to get on with her life and is tired of their drama.

Look at Sosh. So grown up. An elegant up-do for her engagement party shows she doesn’t need crazy colors, accessories or hats to let her true self shine. She’s ready to grow up and be the elegant lady we all know her to be.
