According to Screenrant, the series was never big on ratings and was even in danger of being canceled after Season 6. However, the team convinced Fox to renew it for one final Season 7, which was significantly shorter with only 8 episodes. The series, which ended in 2018 felt like a proper send-off for the cast members as it gave closure to all the beloved characters and the storylines as well. So it is highly unlikely that the show would ever return with an eighth season.
With a satisfying conclusion of Jess and Nick hanging out in the loft one last time after deciding to move away, New Girl felt like a complete end. However, if a potential return is yet to happen, it can only be hoped in what is called a cast and show reunion.
