Girl In The Picture is a true crime documentary film that has been streaming on Netflix since Wednesday, 6 July and hit the number one spot for most popular films on the streaming service.

According to the Netflix description: "A young mother’s mysterious death and her son’s subsequent kidnapping blow open a decades-long mystery about the woman’s true identity, and the murderous federal fugitive at the centre of it all."

What is Girl In The Picture about?

Netflix is often vague on the details in describing its true crime shows, but that doesn't stop them from becoming instant hits with viewers.

The streaming service has gained a reputation for tracking down the strangest and most fascinating of crime cases and viewers have been tweeting about being particularly shocked by this latest film.

It tells the story of Sharon Marshall, a woman whose photo as a young girl with her father was fascinating to the documentary maker who delved into the tragic story of what happened to her.

The film is directed by Skye Borgman, who also made the documentary Abducted in Plain Sight, and tells an equally bizarre and awful tale.

Marshall lived with her father, Franklin Floyd, who turned out to be a known fugitive and whose worrying behaviour is described by some of those who knew Marshall at school in the film.

She died after apparently being the victim of a hit and run in her 20s, leaving behind her infant son Michael, who was taken into foster care.

Floyd tried to take custody of Michael and when it was refused, kidnapped him at gunpoint.

Although Floyd was eventually captured and jailed for the kidnap, he refused to reveal Michael's location.

However, Michael's disappearance wasn't the only strange thing about the case as it turned out that Marshall had gone under a number of different identities, and police began to uncover the disturbing nature of her relationship with Floyd.
