Giraffe Falls on Family’s Car and Smashes Windshield in 'Freak Accident' at Texas Wildlife Center

Kari Hill was visiting the Fossil Rim Wildlife Center in Texas with family when the giraffe lost its footing and fell onto the vehicle

A Texas family’s car was significantly damaged Thursday when a giraffe fell on top of it at a local wildlife conservation facility.

Kari Hill, of Granbury, was visiting the Fossil Rim Wildlife Center in Glen Rose with her teenage sons, ages 15 and 18, as well as her 1-year-old granddaughter, when a giraffe approached her vehicle, according to ABC affiliate WFAA and FOX affiliate KDFW.

The wildlife center allows guests to drive through the 1,800-acre facility to get up close to and feed exotic animals.

The giraffe poked its head through the sunroof after Hill stopped her Kia Sorrento, per the outlets. She took a photo with the animal before it suddenly lost its balance and came tumbling down.

"All was great until he lost his balance and fell onto my windshield,” Hill told WFAA. She said the windshield “started caving in” while the animal flailed around while trying to regain his footing.

Photos taken by Hill and shared with PEOPLE shows the extend of the damage caused by the giraffe's impact.

Hill pulled her car off to the side and “made sure the kids got all the glass off of them,” according to WFAA. She then called the park’s emergency hotline and asked them “to escort us out of there,” and her car was eventually towed away.

"[It was] such a quick, freak accident. [I'm] glad it wasn't worse,” Hill told WFAA. “Cars can be replaced. People can't."

Fossil Rim has confirmed the incident to both WFAA and KDFW. They said the giraffe is doing okay, and that this is the first incident of its kind in their 11 years at the site.

The park does not assume liability for incidents involving guests and animals at the park and guests who visit the park must agree to that before entering, per the outlets.

The conservation facility did not immediately respond to PEOPLE’s request for comment.
