The truth is… evolving… for Gillian Anderson, who in a Wednesday Today hit indicated that she would be open to doing “a little somethin’-somethin'” in Ryan Coogler’s in-the-works X-Files reboot.

It was leaked a little over a year ago that Coogler, the filmmaker behind the Black Panther and Creed movies, was aiming to “remount The X-Files with a diverse cast.”

X-Files creator Chris Carter told Inverse this week that he’d had “a really nice conversation” with Coogler where “I just asked him what his ideas were, and he told me, and I said, ‘Those sound like good ideas.’” The trick in spinning spooky new tales, Carter said, is “Everything’s a conspiracy” these days. “No one knows what the truth is. It’s completely subjective and relative now.”

Appearing on NBC’s Today this morning, Anderson acknowledged how every interview she does (including this one!) eventually circles around to The X-Files and whether she would ever play Dana Scully again.

As recently as two years ago, Anderson said that returning to that well, again, “feels like such an old idea…. In order to even begin to have that conversation, there would need to be a whole new set of writers and the baton would need to be handed on for it to feel like it was new and progressive. So yeah, it’s very much in the past.”

Prior to that, Anderson was even firmer in her stance. “I like to be challenged as an actor. That’s why I got into this business. And it’s time for me to hang up Scully’s hat,” she said in January 2018. “This is it for me — I’m really serious.”

But now… seeing The X-Files land in the hands of “a brilliant, brilliant director” and “a bit of a genius” such as Coogler, Anderson is changing her tune.

Pressed by Today‘s Savannah Guthrie if Coogler’s reboot could get entice her to flash Scully’s badge again, Anderson said, “I’m not saying no, because I think he’s really cool. And I think if he did it, it probably would be done incredibly well. Maybe I’ll pop in for a little somethin’-somethin.'”
