Giants interim coach wanted one souvenir of his season
This was a season to forget for the New York Giants, a 3-13 debacle born of offensive incompetence, defensive indifference, persistent injuries, and highly questionable coaching. Even so, Steve Spagnuolo, the Giants’ interim coach, wanted a souvenir from the season.
As the Giants left the field victorious over division rival Washington, Spagnuolo wrangled a cameraman into taking a photograph of himself and quarterback Eli Manning. “We’ve both been through a lot, and none more than him with this season,” Spagnuolo said of Manning. “But he never changed. I value that in people that can stay that balanced through ups and downs. He’s had the highest of highs, and this was certainly very, very low. But he’s a tremendous competitor, and I appreciate him greatly.”
It’s highly possible neither Spagnuolo nor Manning will be back next season. Spagnuolo will be considered for the once-again vacant head-coaching slot, but he was on the sidelines for the entirety of this season while ex-head coach Ben McAdoo ran the team into a brick wall. Manning, meanwhile, posted some of his weakest numbers in years, and saw his decade-plus streak of starts end because of infighting over the team’s QB direction.
Regardless of what 2018 brings, Spagnuolo and Manning, a couple of the game’s crustiest of crusty vets, had themselves one last good moment in Giant blue.
