Giannis Antetokounmpo hosted the premiere of his new documentary during NBA All-Star weekend 2024 in Indianapolis. An audience including his mother Veronica Antetokounmpo and other family members, Ruben Vincent, Joe La Puma, Lilly Singh, Dale Moss, Maeta, and more gathered in the midwestern city to watch Giannis: The Marvelous Journey

The feature-length documentary examines the story of the star athlete on his path from an impoverished childhood in Greece as the son of Nigerian immigrants to global recognition for his on-court skills. During an interview, the 29-year-old shared that the film is the combined decision of himself and his family to share their experiences on-screen. His mom, fiancée Mariah Riddlesprigger, and brothers Thanasis, Kostas, and Alex Antetokounmpo, all appear in the documentary.

“I talked to my brothers, talked to my mom and Mariah, to see if we were okay and willing to share our story with the world, and we came to this decision as a family,” explained the Milwaukee Bucks power forward to PEOPLE. “There’s been a lot of people that have shared their version of our story, but we felt like this was our time to open up about our dad, our foundation, our journey, and do it in our way.”

He continued to detail, “We don’t know how the world is going to take it. I’ve never opened up about my father to anybody. So it’s good, but it’s also hard.”

Giannis: The Marvelous Journey is directed and produced by Emmy Award winner Kristen Lappas, produced by Connor Schell and Hannah Beir, and executive produced by Aaron Cohen, Libby Geist, Nick Monroe, and Giorgos Panou. Presented by Prime Video, Giannis: The Marvelous Journey is an Improbable Media and Words + Pictures production. Watch it here.

“The family has been apprehensive to tell their story in a documentary, they’re very private, but we were able to really go there on their complicated relationship with Greece, with their dad’s passing which he had never opened up about, and I feel like this just shows a different side of him,” elaborated Lappas to PEOPLE.
