'Ghostbusters' Trailer Breakdown

After months of anticipation, a trailer for Ghostbusters has finally been released. At a press event Wednesday, director Paul Feig confirmed that this is a reboot of the franchise, not a sequel. Yet, while it might be a new cast, the trailer shows the characters aren’t that different from the original team — three scientists and an “everywoman.” Kristen Wiig, Melissa McCarthy, and Kate McKinnon play scientists from different fields, and Leslie Jones rounds out the team as the expert on the city they have to defend — New York.

The reason Feig and co-writer Katie Dippold went the reboot route was because in the original films, people were interacting with ghosts for the first time. If they’d made it a sequel, it would have been a world that has dealt with ghosts for 30 years, and that idea didn’t interest the duo as much. Also, a reboot allows more room for the kind of humor Feig, Wiig, and McCarthy showcased in comedies like Bridesmaids.

One thing we didn’t see in the trailer was the original cast. Annie Potts, Ernie Hudson, Dan Aykroyd, Sigourney Weaver, and Bill Murray all have cameos, but we’re going to have to wait to see them. What we won’t have to wait to see is creepy ghosts, battle scenes, and Chris Hemsworth.
