Germany foreign office reminds Germans in Canada to be nice after hockey win
Germany’s foreign office wanted to make sure no Germans in Canada were starting trouble on Friday. Even if their warning was a bit tongue-in-cheek.
Germany upset Canada on Friday in the semifinals of the men’s hockey tournament at the PyeongChang Winter Olympics. Yeah, NHL players aren’t participating in the tournament, but this is still a massive deal. The most famous German hockey player is probably goalie Olaf Kolzig. Canada has Wayne Gretzky. And Sidney Crosby. And probably hundreds more players more famous than Kolzig.
Anyway, here’s what the foreign office had to say to any Germans who may be in the area of Canada through the remainder of the Olympics.
Travel advisory: Germans in Canada should exercise a high degree of empathy. Be nice, don’t gloat, give hugs, buy rounds of hot chocolate.
Just imagine how you would feel if Canada beat us in soccer

Canada beating Germany in soccer may be one of the biggest upsets in the history of the sport.
In case you were wondering, the two teams have played twice on the soccer field, once in 1994 and again in 2003. Both games were international friendlies and both games resulted in multiple-goal wins by the Germans.
Germany plays the Olympic Athletes from Russia on Saturday for the gold medal.
