A 17-year-old boy has been pronounced brain dead nearly two weeks after a freak accident inside a batting cage during his high school baseball team’s practice.

Jeremy Medina’s family and medical officials from the Northeast Georgia Medical Center made the announcement Wednesday and said they will soon fulfill the boy’s wishes by donating his organs, according to the Atlanta Journal-Constitution, 11Alive.com and local Fox 5.

Medina had been in a coma since the Nov. 20 incident when a teammate’s bat struck him in the head while the players were doing hitting drills inside their Gainesville High School athletic facility.

"The initial trauma to his head was significant and caused him to lose consciousness and as he lost consciousness, he lost his ability to maintain his airway," Dr. Michael Cormican said at a news conference Wednesday, according to Fox 5.

Gainesville High School principal Jamie Green informed students on Wednesday morning that Medina was officially pronounced brain dead and that the family would be moving forward with donating his organs, according to 11Alive.com.

“The life of Jeremy Medina will forever impact the lives of our entire community,” the Gainesville City School System said in a statement on social media. “His passing will mean renewed life for many others as an organ donor. Please continue to pray for the Medina family.”

The school has received an outpouring of support online since the announcement. “Every baseball parent in America is praying for this family right now,” one comment read. “Our hearts are broken.”

Local WSBTV reported the Georgia high school has recently rallied around the call to “Pray 4 Jeremy,” a phrase that was also painted on the outfield grass of the team’s baseball field.

Medina was a senior and played both pitcher and catcher on the school’s baseball team while also excelling in school, his family has said in recent weeks.

“Every time I will tell him, 'You know that not everyone can be like playing sports, working and doing what you do and be able to keep up the grades. Do you know that?' (He says) 'Dad, I don't know, I'm just being me,’ “ Medina’s father David recently told 11Alive.com, describing him as a leader on and off the field.

At the news conference this week, David thanked the community for its support for his son and their family in recent weeks.

“Our strength, my family’s strength, my strength since day one has been rooted in the most amazing power of Jesus Christ,” the father said, according to WSBTV. “(Some well-wishers) don’t even know my son, don’t even know my family, but they’re together with us in prayer and support us in this moment.”
