George Michael's unfortunate passing was only three short years ago. His death shocked the world given his popularity and younger age. But much like these situations within families, some are eternally affected, whether that's by a broken heart, loneliness, or overall guilt. In the worst cases, though, people take their own lives from a number of factors.
There is no indication of any self-harm being the case regarding George Michael, but his sister, Melanie Panayiotou, was found dead at the age of 55 suspiciously on the three year anniversary of her brother's death. She was found by her and Michael's older sister, Yioda.
Panayiotou Found Dead in Home
The Metropolitan Police were notified by the ambulatory service of a woman who was found dead shortly after 7:30 pm, Christmas evening. Initially, the police are reporting that they are not considering the death inherently suspicious, but an investigation is underway.
Panayiotou's death has been confirmed by the family through a lawyer stating, "We can confirm that very tragically, Melanie has passed away suddenly. We would simply ask that the family's privacy be respected at this very sad time," the statement read. "There will be no further comment."
The singer was very close to both Melanie and Yioda. Both were left substantial inheritances from his will upon passing away. Melanie specifically was given 50 million dollars.
Panayiotou's Cryptic Message Days Before
Just several days before her death, Panayiotou had posted a message alongside her sister, father jack, and Michael's former manager, referencing Michael and just how important this time of the year is for their family.
"We have come full circle again, and Christmas time (and the holidays) are upon us once more," they said. "I think we as a family, (there are lots of us, we Greek Cypriots, we're everywhere) have come to fully appreciate (although we already knew really), quite how much love there is out there in the world, for both Yog [Michael's nickname] and his beautiful music."
Encouragement to Contact Loved Ones
"We know how much his lyrics can offer support when things are tough and help celebrate when times are good and life is going well ... and that is just as powerful now as if he were still with us, and as many of you say in your messages, it's a gift," she continued.
Panayiotou concluded her message by encouraging people to send messages to their loved ones and those that they were close to.
She is survived by her sister, Yioda, who is 57, as well as, their father, Jack. Their mother, Lesly, passed away back in 1997.
